My Best Friend’s Exorcism: Book Review

The Story

My Best Friend’s Exorcism, by Grady Hendrix, begins when two girls, Abby Rivers and Gretchen Lang, become best friends. They meet at Abby’s unsuccessful birthday party, where only newcomer Gretchen shows up. The story moves forward and follows the duo as they grow up, and enter sophomore year of high school. They are now a part of a four-girl group who are smart, popular and on the fast-track to success. They also strive to be the first to try things before their peers.

As part of their commitment to being the first, they try LSD. After a great deal of hesitation, they take the drugs. It does not affect any of the girls, except for Gretchen. She runs into the forest and comes back a different person after the drugs wear off. At first, Abby and the group think that it is just after effects from the drugs, but it quickly becomes apparent to Abby that something else is wrong with her friend.

Soon, she realizes that the devil has her best friend and it is up to her to save Gretchen before it is too late.

What I Thought

I have never been much of a fan of the exorcism and demonic possession stories, but this one was pretty good. It had my attention throughout the story, and there was a lot of tenseness that kept me wondering if Abby was going to be successful in her fight for her friend. Plus, the ending was amazing and I actually cried a little bit (that is no easy feat to accomplish). Parts of the book were a little ridiculous, but did lighten the mood. The bodybuilder exorcist was one of those things that did stretch it a little for me, but provided comic relief.

Overall, the story was very good. Hendrix wove a lot of tension throughout the high school drama aspect of the story, which helped to keep the book from being too serious and too one-dimensional.

Why You Should Read It

It was a fun, quirky, and engaging story. I laughed, I cried, and I wanted to know what happened at the end. The nostalgic 80’s feeling was also well done, and totally tubular,  to the max.
