Darling: Book Review

The Story

Darling, the first horror novel by Brad C. Hodson, is set in the mysterious Raynham Place, an apartment complex in Tennessee with a dark and complex history. The lands were once a site of a battlefield during the Civil War, and then became a tuberculosis hospital. In the present day, dark and mysterious things happen to the tenants who live at Raynham Place, and it is immersed in tales of supernatural lore.

Dennis and Mike, two lifelong friends, move to Raynham Place together. Even though something seems off, their stay starts off well and they get to know their fellow tenants. Life goes on as normal, until Raynham Place and its mysterious occurrences begin to take hold of them.

What I Thought

I loved this novel. It was creepy as hell and I loved it so much that I might read it again. It integrated mythology, history, and a terrible sense of foreboding, and the ending was total insanity. It was a fresh read, even though it was published back in 2012, and I have never read a book quite like it. The characters, and the relationships among them, were spot-on. The vulnerabilities of the characters fed into the story line, and the tensity of the relationships helped to further the impact of the ending. Not to mention the pacing of the novel was perfectly done. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time!

Why You Should Read It

Need I say more? It’s creepy and scary, and it freaked me out, which is not that easy to do. It is a perfect read for a rainy evening, curled up under a blanket with some tea. I would definitely recommend taking a breather every now and then, or else you might be a shaking mess of nerves by the time you finish the book.

Darling, by Brad C. Hodson, was published on October 8, 2012 by Bad Moon Books.
